Decals Versus Stickers: Buyer’s Guide For Beginners

Decals Versus Stickers: Buyer's Guide For Beginners

The terms “decal” and “sticker” are often used interchangeably, but there are important differences between the two. Today’s post explains all the pros and cons to help you make a smarter purchase.

Uses For Decals And Stickers

Though they’re physically and conceptually similar products, stickers and decals are used very differently. Stickers tend to be handed out to people en masse in order to increase brand awareness or act as incentives for visiting your store or trade show booth. In contrast, decals are installed by the buyer in a location of their choosing as a versatile signage asset that works in almost any setting.

Stickers are typically used for logos and illustrations, whereas decals are used for decoration and advertising purposes on windows, floors, walls, and vehicles.

Size Differences Between Decals And Stickers

Stickers are generally smaller in size, so they’re used most often on smaller objects, like laptops, water bottles, guitar cases, briefcases, notebooks, and product packaging. In contrast, decals tend to run quite large. As such, they’re usually ordered for larger applications–walls, windows, floors, vehicles, and so on.

Because they tend to be bigger, decals are usually ordered in smaller quantities, while stickers get printed in bulk. A typical business owner might order one or two decals at a time–one for their wall, one for their window. In contrast, stickers are ordered by the hundreds so that business owners can hand them out to employees, store visitors, or trade show audiences.

Installation Options For Decals And Stickers

Stickers can be applied to almost any smooth surface. Installation is as easy as peel-and-stick. And Signworld partners use only top quality materials that allow for residue-free removal.

There are several types of decals, each intended for a different surface (e.g. wall, window, floor), but the installation process is similar across the board. The vinyl has a self-adhesive backing that works a lot like a sticker. Depending on whether you buy a temporary or semi-permanent decal, the removal process can be a little more involved.

Lifespan Differences Between Decals And Stickers

Decals outlast stickers by a long shot. With proper installation and maintenance, decals can easily last 5 years, whereas stickers will start to peel or fade away much sooner.

Now that you understand the main differences between decals and stickers, you can choose what’s best for your budget and signage needs. But where do you turn when it’s time to buy?

Finding the right graphics team is easier said than done. Talented in-house creative teams are hard to come by, and outsourcing gets expensive. Moreover, plenty of companies cut corners on materials to reduce manufacturing costs.
